Betting dictionary: the complete UK glossary
Every sport has its vocabulary, and UK betting has more than most. This glossary covers the terms you'll see across UKGC-licensed bookmakers, from basic markets to racing-specific jargon. Bookmark it and reach for it whenever a term puzzles you.
Stakes and odds
- Stake — the amount you bet.
- Returns — what the bookmaker pays back (stake + winnings, or just winnings on a Free Bet).
- Odds (fractional) — UK traditional format. 5/2 means win £5 for every £2 staked.
- Odds (decimal) — modern format. 3.50 means stake × 3.50 = total return.
- Evens — 1/1 odds. Stake £10, win £10.
- Odds-on — selection is short of evens (e.g. 1/2). You risk more than you win.
- Odds-against — selection is over evens. You win more than you stake.
Bet types
- Single — one selection, one bet.
- Double / Treble / Accumulator — multiple selections all must win.
- Each-way — two bets: win at full odds + place at fraction of odds.
- Bet Builder — combine selections from the same match into one bet.
- Lucky 15 / 31 / 63 — racing multiples on 4/5/6 selections.
- Trixie / Yankee / Patent — combinations of multiple bets without the singles (Trixie/Yankee) or with (Patent).
Football markets
- 1X2 — home win / draw / away win.
- BTTS — both teams to score (yes/no).
- Asian handicap — one team has a goal head start. No draw possible.
- Over/Under — total goals more or fewer than a line (typically 2.5).
- Correct score — exact final score.
- HT/FT — result at half-time and full-time.
Horse racing
- SP (Starting Price) — official odds at the start of the race.
- BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) — if your early price is shorter than SP, you're paid the bigger price.
- Each-way — win + place (usually 1/4 or 1/5 odds for 2nd/3rd).
- Rule 4 deduction — payouts reduced if a horse is withdrawn (non-runner).
- Tote — pool betting, not fixed odds.
- NAP — a tipster's strongest selection of the day.
- Forecast / Tricast — 1st-2nd / 1st-2nd-3rd in correct order.
Bookmaker terms
- Free Bet — stake-not-returned promotional bet.
- Wagering requirement — multiple of a bonus you must turn over before withdrawing.
- Cash out — settle an open bet early for less than potential winnings.
- Bet Boost / Price Boost — temporarily enhanced odds on a featured selection.
- In-play / Live — betting while the event is happening.
- Void — bet cancelled, stake returned.
- Dead heat — tie. Stake split between tied selections.
Responsible gambling
- Deposit limit — cap on how much you can deposit per day/week/month.
- Time-out — temporary account block (24h to 6 weeks).
- Self-exclusion — long-term account closure (6 months minimum at one site).
- GamStop — national self-exclusion scheme; one registration blocks every UKGC site.
